Songs From Both Sides of the Aegean
I was still a child. We were going to Ayvalık from Istanbul. As we approached the Aegean coast, Greek songs were heard on the radio. My father turned the radio up louder. I looked at the sea and realized that the sea was more beautiful when I listened to those songs.
I was at university. We, as a group of friends, decided to launch a literary magazine. I determined the subject of my article as rebetiko songs. While researching for my writing, I found a book: Gail Host’s “Rembetika”. It was difficult to reach this book since it had not a new edition. But I found the book by visiting the second-hand booksellers. Then I wrote my article called “Music Rising from the Aegean: Rebetiko” for the magazine.
I was 23 years old. I had a birthday party. My friends took care to buy gifts that I would love. One gift was a Haris Alexiou album, and another gift was a Greek mythology dictionary, these were my favorite gifts.
I was 26 years old, I went on a trip to Thessaloniki. While I was eating appetizers at a beautiful restaurant there, my favorite rebetiko song “Stou Thoma” was playing. I couldn’t help but think that some things were not accidental.
I was 27 years old, I participated in the Greek-Turkish Young Leaders Symposium and met amazing people.
Now, I am 28 years old. I have started to learn the Greek language and opened this blog. In this blog, I will translate my favorite Greek songs into Turkish. It will be a way for me to practice Greek and listen to the voice of my heart.

Ege’nin İki Yakasından Şarkılar
Daha küçüğüm. İstanbul’dan Ayvalık’a gidiyoruz, Ege kıyılarına yaklaştıkça radyodan Yunanca şarkılar duyuluyor. Babam radyonun sesini açıyor. Denize bakıyorum ve anlıyorum ki, o şarkıları dinlerken baktığımda deniz daha güzel.
Üniversitedeyim. Bir grup arkadaş olarak bir edebiyat dergisi çıkarmaya karar veriyoruz. Yazımın konusunu rembetiko şarkıları olarak belirliyorum ve yazım için araştırma yaparken bir kitaba ulaşıyorum: Gail Host’un “Rembetika”sı. Yeni baskısı olmadığı için bu kitaba ulaşmak zor oluyor ama sahafları gezerek kitabı buluyorum. Daha sonra dergi için “Ege’den Yükselen Müzik: Rebetiko” başlıklı yazımı yazıyorum.
23 yaşındayım. Doğum günü partim var ve arkadaşlarım beğeneceğim hediyeler almaya özen gösteriyorlar. Bir hediye Haris Alexiou albümü, bir hediye Yunan mitolojisi sözlüğü. Bunlar en sevdiğim hediyeler oluyor.
26 yaşındayım. Selanik’e gezmeye gidiyorum. Orada güzel bir restoranda iştahla mezeleri yerken en sevdiğim rembetiko şarkısı “Stou Thoma” çalıyor. Bazı şeylerin tesadüf olmadığını düşünüyorum.
27 yaşındayım, Yunan-Türk Genç Liderler Sempozyumu’na katılıyorum ve orada harika insanlarla tanışıyorum.
Şimdi 28 yaşındayım. Yunanca öğrenmeye başladım ve bu blogu açtım. Bu blogda en sevdiğim Yunanca şarkıları Türkçe’ye çevireceğim. Bu benim için hem Yunanca pratik yapmanın ve hem de kalbimin sesini dinlemenin bir yolu olacak.
